What You Need to Know Before Buying Artwork from Abroad

As global trade policies continue to change, I understand that international buyers—especially in the U.S.—may be wondering: Will I have to pay import duties on artwork? And if so, how much and when?

I’ve prepared this guide to help you understand the current situation, what may change in the near future, and what to expect when purchasing original artwork from abroad, including from my shop.

  1. Current Import Duties on Artwork

At the moment, original artworks—such as oil paintings, drawings, and sculptures—are exempt from U.S. import tariffs. This means that when you purchase original art from international sellers like me, you typically don’t have to pay any import duties or extra taxes at customs. This is great news for collectors and anyone who simply loves art.

  1. What Could Change in 2025

Starting April 3, 2025, U.S. customs will begin enforcing new import regulations that may affect some international orders—especially those valued at over $800. Here are a few important things to consider:

Orders over $800 may be subject to additional import duties and customs fees.

You might be asked to provide personal information (such as a tax ID or Social Security number) to complete customs clearance.

Shipping delays may occur due to increased inspections and processing at U.S. customs.

These duties and fees are not included in the price of the artwork and are typically collected by the shipping company.
  1. How This Might Affect Your Purchase

Even though original artworks are still exempt from direct tariffs, wider trade tensions can affect international shipping costs and delivery times. Customs processes may become more complex, especially for higher-value purchases.

I also know that during periods of economic uncertainty, art sales tend to slow down worldwide. But I remain committed to keeping my work accessible and my process transparent.

I ship my artworks internationally using reliable, trackable carriers and stay informed about changes in customs policies. My goal is to make your experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, wherever you are.

If any customs-related issues come up, I’ll do my best to support you through the process and make sure your artwork arrives safely.

  1. A Few Tips for U.S. Buyers If your order is under $800, you likely won’t need to worry about customs duties at all. For orders over $800, be prepared for possible fees and minor shipping delays. Watch for emails or phone calls from your shipping carrier in case they need additional information to complete customs clearance.

Art Should Cross Borders Freely

I believe that art should travel freely and continue to connect people across the world. While international trade rules may change, my purpose remains the same: to offer original, heartfelt artworks that bring beauty and meaning into your space.

If you have any questions about shipping, customs, or your order, feel free to contact me—I’ll be happy to help.

Important Update: As of early 9 April 2025, the implementation of the new tariffs has been officially postponed for 90 days. This means that, for now, no additional duties will apply to international orders over $800—but the situation may continue to evolve. I will keep this page updated with the latest information to help you stay informed when purchasing art from abroad.
